Through my writing, speaking, and private consultation, I am "a change agent," that is, I help people and organizations gain abilities to live meaningfully and accomplish goals they do not presently possess, while enjoying a sense of satisfaction during the process of learning and implementing. My intended audience is that portion of the audience for self-help literature who are more intellectually curious and sophisticated than average. They would be receptive to a presentation that focuses on serious reflection on life experience, analysis of ideas, and passionate engagement, without depending on simplistic formulas, romanticism, ideology, and purely technique-oriented approaches to personal growth.
What's your vision?
I want a cover for a series of five volumes covering personal and professional development from different perspectives. Each volume will feature the same art, which consists of a photograph on the front cover called "Silver Crested Cockatoo Rising" by Sheila Smart, for which I have purchased the rights to use in this way. Each volume will have a different title, plus my name, printed over the art. My name, Stephen Friedlander, Ph.D., must appear above the title. The working title of the first book in the series is "Awareness & Personal Growth" The back of the book will include an author's photo and the following text:
Everyone is a natural psychologist.
Awareness & Personal Growth
invites you to do better.
<<[THE COMPLETE COPY FOR THE BACK COVER IS CURRENTLY UNDERGOING REVISION. FINAL COPY WILL BE AVAILABLE SOON.] [THERE WILL BE ONE VERY BRIEF TESTIMONIAL ON FRONT COVER, AND ONE OR POSSIBLY TWO ON THE BACK COVER TO BE SUPPLIED IN APPROXIMATELY 3 WEEKS.]
USE THE FOLLOWING COPY ON THE BACK COVER OF THE BOOK INSTEAD OF WHAT IS THERE NOW: [CENTER THE FIRST SENTENCE AND USE VERY LARGE FONT SIZE]
We are all psychologists.
Every attempt to understand ourselves and others is psychological in essence, in that “understanding” is based on perceptions of three "psychological" processes: thinking, feeling, and doing. A new concept, everyday psychology, captures the significance of our investment in observing and interpreting thoughts, emotions, and actions in ourselves and others, independent of psychological theory.
In contrast to objectively studying how those patterns arise, or how to manipulate them into new configurations, everyday psychology has five noteworthy characteristics: it is generally intuitive (we usually can't explain it objectively), universal (everybody does it), spontaneous (it happens without effort or intent), subconscious (most of the time we don't realize we are engaged in it), and information gathering (more weight is given to observing than intervening).
Awareness and Personal Growth is designed for curious, open-minded people who appreciate the universality of everyday psychology, its intuitive character, its spontaneity, openness to the unconscious, and information-seeking. Instead of techniques for adjusting to social norms based on the stigma or stereotypes of the crowd, the objective here is to build resources for managing stress and distress. The book introduces a brand new perspective on fulfillment in everyday life by bringing the two separate concepts in the title into direct correspondence with each other. By shunning prescriptions for thinking, feeling, and doing the book avoids the idealization or tunnel vision that "self-help" literature sometimes deals in. Dr. Stephen Friedlander is wholeheartedly committed to individualistic solutions, and what you get here is a tutorial on how to free yourself from preconceptions to acquire better understanding of your own true nature.
