Andy Kerckhoff got their new book cover by running a design contest:
Cover for Book About Parenting Young Teens
Check out Andy Kerckhoff's Book cover contest…
My goal is to encourage more adults to better understand and be more involved in the lives of early-adolescent children (10-14 year olds). I blog, tweet, and write books about parenting and teaching. The target audience in parents of 8-16 year olds (70% moms, 30% dads).
What's your vision?
I need a book cover which has a single icon in the middle with the title above it. I am looking for something clean and bold. I think a white or light-colored background with a bold image in the middle with plenty of blank space around it will 'pop' from far away. The title is "Critical Connection: A Practical Guide to Parenting Young Teens." The colors I prefer are black, white, electric blue, hot pink, and lime green. See my blog at growingupwell.org for the colors and feel. Bright and clean is good. Also, it needs to strike a balance between masculine and feminine. It can't scare away moms or dads.
The idea of connection or disconnection could be represented with the wi-fi pizza slice or the cell phone bars. I thought it could be cool to make an icon with one of those symbols on the heart of a child. But take it easy on the Valentine heart motif (that will scare dads away). Headphones and smartphones are a symbol of the disconnect that parents feel with their kids. Also, any 3D shading / shadowing would be nice. Here are some images (below) I quickly located on Google Images that may help communicate what I am looking for. Many parents are disconnected from their kids and long to create a vital connection. I need a book cover that expresses that desire to reconnect with kids who are growing up and away from their parents.
