Michael Bruan is a father, husband, teacher, and sometimes, poet. An English teacher with almost 20 years of experience across three unique schools, Michael has had the good fortune to share his love of literature, and the fundamental nature of inquiry with his students. Still, it is his family that matters to him most, for it is those relationships that live in his poetry.

Like songs of experience, this collection captures the essence of the poet's struggle with an irrepressible faith, a challenging childhood, and the ways in which our passions produces both the best and worst that we are capable of. With discourses on coming of age, the complicated nature of love, and the humanity's prideful pursuit of knowledge, this collection is the product of the poet's unrelenting self-inquiry.

I titled the book Spiritus because I wanted it to capture the idea of irrepressible faith...Not necessarily religious faith, but a more transcendental belief in the spirit. I'm in including the first poem in the collection, which might shed some light on how I write and a bit of the themes I touch on throughout the collection. Toys To Tame Our Savage Selves Most of us have forgotten the world as it was in our youth– Toys to tame our savage selves. Everyday becoming our fathers and mothers. Everyday devouring little beasts of need inside our simple minds. Hunting in forests of forced truths for a sacred cow, or embers of creation’s spark. Spears and scepters, weapons shared between us– hoping to pierce the flesh of some cunning fox while sitting in pews and saying “Our Fathers”. Every moment a memento To pacify. To quench the fire. To make us meek little lambs. The mind’s inevitable mutiny. A spear became a pen, poaching Words of prey. As my father’s hunt buffalo Forever, Etched in the stone of a cave.
