Detectives Kirk Lucian and his partner Mandy Wing investigate the reported suicide of a woman in her backyard. She’s a pillar in her Cambridge community and liked by everyone. But the hanging looks staged to Kirk and Mandy. Suspicions confirmed, they make a list of possible suspects. Clues begin to connect to the cold case of a beautiful 16-year old Romany exchange student who died mysteriously in a fire while she slept in the backyard treehouse of her host family. Dark circumstances surround Vadima Lupescu whose foreign ways –such as reading palms at pizza parties--would amuse her American teenage friends, including reading their palms at pizza parties. But when one student suddenly dies of a rare aneurism, the others wonder if Vadima’s “gypsy powers” had something to do with that. After Kirk and Mandy investigate some bizarre rumors—that Vadima put curses on people, such as causing one kid’s mother to get shingles, another kid’s dog to get run over—do they realize that the cold case of Vadima’s death has something to do with that recent hanging that beset Kirk and Mandy?
My books have been bestsellers because they have been celebrated as intense, compelling, and well-crafted mysteries and thrillers. And RUMOR OF EVIL is one of my best. The book addresses several issues of interest to women who buy most suspense novels—interests such as: • Female bonding • Female rivalry • Psychopathology • How the death of a child affects a marriage. • The need for a female to be free from a partner’s control. • The need for female agency. • The nature of ethnic and sexual prejudice. • The potentially dangerous consequences of conspiracy theories and unfounded rumors. • The toxic nature of sexual rivalry.
Book cover type
The core crime in this mystery is the cold-case torching of a beautiful Romany exchange student while asleep in a typical suburban treehouse. The girl is wrongfully accused of being a witch, yet there is no supernatural element in the novel, just suspicions by the kids. 1. I suggest the image of an innocent treehouse, but in a gothic style, such as one cover design for ROSEMARY'S BABY—a creepy looking baby carriage. 2. Image of a treetop fire with hints of a treehouse structure in the flames. 3. That same image with a pretty teenage girl looking ominously out from the cover. Attaching other cover designs that the author likes.
