Food & Drink
Here's our boilerplate info: Tallgrass Brewing Company is a regional craft brewery based in Manhattan, Kansas, with distribution in 14 states across the Midwest, Upper Midwest and parts of the southern U.S. Tallgrass, also the largest brewery in the state of Kansas, was founded by Jeff Gill in 2007 and now offers a full line of award-winning craft beers produced in a 60,000-square-foot facility located near the Flint Hills. Tallgrass fearlessly explores, creates and shares new beers with fun, positive and exciting branding.
What's your vision?
Flint Hills Beverage is one of several wholesalers/distributors we work with in Kansas. They are located across the street from our facility and are responsible for helping promote the Tallgrass brand in Manhattan and in surrounding communities. Their craft beer brand manager drives her routes in a van that is wrapped in graphics promoting one of our seasonal beers, Halcyon Wheat,. We want to update the van wrap with new graphics to promote 8-Bit Pale Ale, one of our flagship brands and top-selling products. We have an in-house artist who has developed several of our brands and is responsible for all of our can and packaging designs, posters, advertisements, flyers and other materials. He has many high-priority projects in the queue right now, which is why we are opening up this design project to outside designers. I will make a wide range of photos and graphics available to the artists in this contest so you have a strong palette to start with. It will include the overall graphics package for 8-Bit Pale Ale, including product photos and mockups of packaging designs, Tallgrass Brewing Company logos, our primary font and color schemes, and other materials. We do have a very strong brand developed for both the brewery overall and the 8-Bit beer and wish to use our existing materials as the basis for the design. The local company which actually prints and installs the van wrap provided us with some dimensions and a few photos of the vehicle from the last project. This should hopefully help you in your design process. Tail light to headlight = 164 ¼” Height, under mirror to bottom of door = 29 ½” Door width = 44” Bottom of door handle to black molding = 12 ½” Using the previous design as a guide, please create a new van wrap design to promote the 8-Bit Pale Ale brand, where the primary branding elements are shown on each side of the vehicle, and the Tallgrass Brewing Company name also is given prominence.
At Tallgrass, we take our beers seriously, but we don't take ourselves too seriously. We invest a great deal of resources to ensure our beer quality is consistent and remarkable with every batch, but we like to be a little more loose in our approach to branding beers. "Explore, Create, Share" is our brewery's mantra. This means we are passionate about and driven by exploring new flavors, ideas and beer styles, creating something amazing out of those ideas and then sharing it with as many people as we possibly can. It's the same guiding principle that Jeff followed in his homebrewing days before he started the brewery. If you can also incorporate this element into the design, that would be awesome. Additionally, everything we produce from a branding standpoint has to be fun, positive and exciting. It is the other primary guiding principle we follow when creating new beers, brands and designs. We've achieved success to this date because of that approach. Beer drinkers are drawn to our brewery because they identify with the brands, particularly 8-Bit, which was inspired by the early video game systems. People have a very positive association with that time in their life, playing those video games with their friends, and make that same positive connection with the beer. (The beer also is really good.) It's a win-win. We want to generate an emotional response from people when they see our brands out in the market, whether it's on a can, a van or on a poster. We want to "bring the WOW" and create excitement. Sometimes we like to have a touch of irreverence and bring a tongue-in-cheek aesthetic to our branding and our designs. We are not overly concerned with what other breweries are doing in terms of designs and prefer to do what feels right to us. That's why in our boilerplate we say, "Tallgrass fearlessly explores, creates and shares new beers with fun, positive and exciting branding."
