Sarpedon Software got their new icon or button by running a design contest:
breakbase needs a new icon design!
Check out Sarpedon Software's Icon or button contest…
breakbase is a web application that collects crash reports when a desktop application crashes. Once we've got a crash report, we use super smart algorithms to analyse, group and provide statistics.
What's your vision?
breakbase needs an icon to become part of its logo - (logotype is not necessary, this contest is about the icon) We're looking for an icon that simply and clearly communicates some of the ideas of breakbase - it's a database ('base' in breakbase) of when your application breaks ('break' in breakbase). There are heaps of visual ideas around crashes, breaks, errors and heaps around databases, collecions, storage etc. We're looking for an icon that shows both of these combined. Attached is a sample colour palette - These are just a sample of a colour scheme we like, feel free to suggest other interesting ideas - it's got 2 tones of red (representing 'errors') and 2 tones of grey (for 'background' colors) and a blue as a complimentary highlight to make it more interesting. Bold, crisp, clear. The visual style we're going for is something crisp, clear and simple. Inspired by 'flat' design, but with depth from shadows or gradients. Not ultra-realistic, but not too flat either. (NOTE: This description of the 'flatness' has changed as most designs we've have been too 'flat' - The reason for the initial description of 'flat' was to make sure the icon is still clear in the favicon and small sizes, but from the designs we've received so far it looks like the larger size icons will need more detail. It might be good to prepare an icon with fewer details to remain clear at the smaller sizes) We'll need the PSD or Illustrator source files, and examples of different sizes of the icon. * Favicon (16px x 16px) and retina (32px x 32px) * Website header (say 100px high - 200px @2x) to go next to the logotype * Nice big landing page (say 500px high - 1000px @2x). Might be best to go with a vector considering the flat direction and different sizes, but hey, you're the artist!
Some icons in a style that we like: http://dribbble.com/shots/1039077-Eagle-Mascot (Like the flat style, but use of slight gradients to give it depth). http://dribbble.com/shots/789745-Rocket (Like the simplicity and that bit of depth with the inset shading). http://dribbble.com/shots/1037957-Wolf (Like the simplicity and usage of negative space).
