Sunstone Yoga has a variety of icons we are looking to update. Currently we use circular icons; as you can see in our current versions.
We would however like to move to Apple App style, square with rounded edges, icons. Here is a template that we located on the web that may assist in this process:
http://blog.cocoia.com/2010/iphone-4-icon-psd-file/
All icon designs need to look good at all the standard apple sizes from 29x29 up. We currently use some 16x16 icons but it is difficult for those to ever look nice so we will be discontinuing that practice.
Because these icons need to all look good together we are packaging them as one design project. We are very open to design approaches that deviate from the current approach, or even the recommend approaches below, as long as you demonstrate you have taken the time to understand what the design is trying to communicate and your approach does as good or better at communicating to the viewer. Please don’t submit designs without understanding the intent of what we are trying to accomplish. To that end don’t hesitate to ask questions.
ICONS
The class group of 8 icons is represented in 3 ways:
1. The Icon – you can see an example of how we use just the icons here:
http://www.sunstoneyoga.com/locations-schedules
The Icon with line – you can see an example of how we use this here:
http://www.sunstoneyoga.com/products-services/yoga-classes
3. Just the line – You can see in the image above and at these locations how the lines get used:
http://www.sunstoneyoga.com/products-services/yoga-classeshttp://www.sunstoneyoga.com/locations-schedules/ndSo there are essentially 5 lines for each Icon. 30, 60, & 90 variable length line show above. The line in the legend and the line in the schedule itself:

You can read about each of the classes here:

Some notes and additions:
4. Intro Series – Current design is a play button. This class is likely turning into just a 30 minute orientation as we are likely introducing a class called the Spark Series.
See attachment for Image
5. Spark Series – This is going to be similar to our Fire Series but will be at a cooler temperature and a slower pace. It will replace the Intro Series except for the 30 minute portion of the Intro Series that is more of an orientation. Spark will need to be a unique Icon that both the icon and the line are distinguishable from other icons.
6. Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and Wood – these classes are named after the 5 Chinese elements. You can read more about the 5 Chinese elements on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wu_Xing

Google Image search will yield thousands of examples for inspiration but please avoid designs that are overly similar to existing designs.
7. 84 Asanas – this class only has an example of the icon but your design will need both the icon and the line.

8. Color Palette – The color palette could potentially be the most challenging aspect of this group of designs. We need the lines to be distinguishable from each other because of how they are used on the schedules. How you use color will be very important.
60-DAY YOGA CHALLENGE
We need a NEW Icon that designates our 60-Day yoga challenge.
We don’t have a specific Icon as an example but we have used Uncle Sam and some text icons:

Currently instead of an icon we have some text. Examples:

1 all the way to 19, then +20 all the way to +100

Perhaps sticking with the Apple Icon theme, once we have the icon, we can use the red bubble indicator for the counts.
See attachment for Image
This concept can be used with any Icon and we may implement it for other uses like indicating how many classes our teachers have taught of a particular class. So, for example, your new Fire Class icon would then have a red bubble indicator with a number in the bubble.
Continuing with this theme we have teachers that earn High Distinction in their teaching ability of certain classes. So, for example, your new Fire Class icon would then have a red bubble indicator with a HD in the bubble. There are obviously dozens of ways to approach this.
PROGRESSIONS
Progressions are generally a succession of 30 minute versions of our Fire, Spark, Earth, Metal and Wood classes. There is a 5 minute break between each class. Currently we are indicating this with a double arrow:
Legend: See attachment for Image
Example In the schedule: See attachment for Image
We want to update this to look better and communicate better. Instead of having the double arrows we have thought about other ways of adapting the line to indicate it is a progression. Remember Progressions are classes that have 5 minute breaks between them so you can stay for 1 or more or come in during any 5 minute break. So some classes in a Progression are the start or end of the progress and others are between classes.
So we have thought that maybe the position of the indicator could also indicate if the class is a start, end or in between. Here are some examples:
See attachment for Image
The top row is the start, the middle is between and the bottom row is the end. We think some of these approaches have potential but they obviously need work and an eye for design.
