What's your vision?
A single stylised graphic for use in advertising about screenings of the movie Gattaca during Australia's National Science Week. This image would be manipulable for social media (facebook and twitter primarily) and would suggest a colour palette for flyers. We would like to avoid dystopian colours and too many shadows. The colour palette should work with (but not specifically use) logos in 'research blues' eg. Pantone 7689C/Pantone 298C. The audience is non-specialist -- we want to attract a broad range of audiences (aged 15+) interested in festival events, science fiction, film, and genetics. This is a not-for-profit effort to encourage conversation about DNA and destiny at screenings of Gattaca in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane. The description of the event is: Are your genes your destiny? Genomics and the science of Gattaca Join us for a free screening discussion of the American science fiction film Gattaca, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Gattaca explores the consequences of genetic selection and manipulation on society through the eyes of genetically less-than-perfect Vincent (Ethan Hawke) and genetically perfect Irene (Uma Thurman). Vincent dreams of being an astronaut and enters into a bloody arrangement with the genetically perfect but now disabled Jerome (Jude Law) to take on Jerome's identity and train for space. The film screening will be followed by a spirited discussion between our commentators from the worlds of ethics, science and the creative arts, who will explore how much the film accurately depicts and predicts today’s technological trends. The image will be used to evoke interest in discussions of DNA, identity and destiny. The image should use a DNA molecule (accurate proportions and right-handed spiral, but can be quite abstracted and stylised) and communicate one person's interest in conquering or overthrowing their DNA destiny. We'd be keen to emulate some of the concept art below uses themes of overcoming DNA faults, climbing a DNA ladder to space, or superimposing the genetically imperfect Vincent on a high DNA-like spiral above the genetically perfect but disabled Jerome. The image should suggest the film but can't use [copyright] imagery from the film with Ethan Hawke, Jude Law or Uma Thurman. It could however, adapt or manipulate well known images from the film (attached as helpful imagery) to create a stylised artpiece. This high resolution (ideally) vector graphic will be able to be repurposed for web use, printed flyers/advertising, It would need to work as full colour and black and white; but could be either portrait or landscape.
We'd like to avoid overtones of gloom and doom; the aim is to have an image that helps us to create a recognised identity and could include questions around the themes in the film and the status of the science, encouraging discussion.
