I am a French writer of historical and fantasy novels. I've published already 4 books. I am starting a series where I explain the rise and decadence of various civilizations around the world by their alliances with magical people. I am also a serial entrepreneur.
What's your vision?
WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR Illustration to be used in the book cover of my last novel "Les Voix de Venise" (Venice's voices) ABOUT THE STORY 18th century Venice. Nobody can talk because of an old alliance Saint Mark made with the sea people. In exchange for power over the seas, Venice has to offer the voices of all its men and women above 15 years old. Only 1000 noble people can keep their voices and form the Grand Council of the Republic. In 1796 during Ascension ceremony, a 15y.o. boy named Angelo doesn't lose his voice. Nobody knows why but the sea people will take it wrong and the old alliance will shatter. An ambitious French general named Bonaparte will take advantage of the situation to conquer Venice and take down the Republic. Everything in the book is historically relevant except the presence of mermaids and tritons. Some tritons live among men because they serve as helmsman or gondolier. Mermaids stay most of the time in Neptuno’s kingdom under the sea but can be seen sometime around the Lido’s beach. The story explains why Venice is suffering of acqua alta still today. SUGGESTION OF SETTING (but feel free to use your own imagination, I'll be glad to be surprised, this suggestion is only to guide you if you need it. If you have a great idea, please go for it !) - St Mark's square under water (because of acqua alta) OR another well-known place in Venice (view from the laguna, Rialto bridge, etc.) - a statue of the mermaid Princess Maria on the square. NB : she is worshipped like Catholic Virgin Maria and can look like her except for the fish tail. She also has wild and alive hair like Medusa. - a seagull flying in the sky (it is the story's narrator) - style like a painting. For inspiration look at Francesco Guardi's or Canaletto's work (Venice famous XVIIIth century painting). Or Tiepolo. You can use also watercolor, pastel style, or even an impressionist style. Optional (or small details) : - noble people wearing the famous "bauta" (black cape and tricorn hat, white mask) - two teenagers: a young man with blond curls and light green eyes and a young girl, brown-haired, with a cap and a white dress TARGET OF THE BOOK AND ATMOSPHERE My target is not the typical fantasy binge reader, so nothing flashy. I'd like something elegant. My writing style is classical (like 19th c. writers) and musical (all the book has been written and can be read listening to Vivaldi's music). The presence of mermaids should be hinted to excite the reader's curiosity. 18th century Venice is a place of joy, but trouble is coming. Readers should look at the illustration and think : "Oh yes, that's so true : Venice is incredibly beautiful but... what is this detail ? (for ex: mermaid statue). I don't remember this in Venice. That's weird ! That makes me dream... mermaids in Venice !" I don't want to fell into romantic cliché books about Venice. OTHER IDEAS OF SETTING - a well-known view of Venice with the silhouette of a mermaid on a rock (like a hint or a small detail) and the seagull in the sky - a group of noble people riding a gondola that is pushed by a triton - the Ascension Day celebrations on Saint Mark square : the marriage of Venice and the sea. It is a real traditional feast in Venice during which the Doge rides the Bucentaure boat in the laguna . In my book I twisted it with a real wedding between Venice's Doge (Prince) and mermaid Princess Maria. On this occasion the voices of all 15 yo children are offered to the sea people. A choir of children directed by the red-haired priest Vivaldi traditionally sings until they lose their voice. The voices are collected by tritons and mermaids riding sagittarius (half orca, half deer).
I'm looking for a long run collaboration. So I may offer another mission to the winner in order to create the book cover. Then, other books will come and I wish the illustrations to be in the same style so I may work with the same artist for every book.
