Dog assisted learning.
I want Canine Comprehension to be primarily known as a English tutoring business that encourages children to enjoy reading and study harder. The ‘tool’ I use to motivate children are Animal Assistance Therapy dogs. Animal-assisted therapy, at its most basic, means including animals in therapeutic work with humans. There are many ways that animals can be included when working with humans, such as in counselling, teaching/education, rehabilitation, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, disaster relief, as humorous relief, as comfort and to assist in learning life skills, social skills or other key behaviours, to name a few. When a professional incorporates an animal into their therapeutic practice, they find ways of allowing the animal to extend and facilitate their goals, A counsellor, for example may incorporate the use of a dog to explore and draw out issues of anger or attachment. Physical therapists may use handling of a small animal or grooming a horse in a motor-skills programme, or dog walking in a fitness or strength-training programme. As an English teacher, I use the AAT dogs to create a positive, relaxed learning environment through dog play and interaction and by teaching kids to teach dogs tricks and comparing how we learn and how dogs learn. There are three main areas to this business: 1. School Programs: where we can work on. · collaboration and effective task sharing techniques, · inter-personal skills, · listening skills, · verbal communication skills, · written comprehension skills. 2. English Tutoring: · One on One tutoring. · Small Group tutorials (3-5 students) · Walk the dog and talk (about the text they are studying) sessions 3. Reading Corners: We are aware that some kids need a little motivation to love reading. To help promote literacy we have set up reading corners. These reading corners are designed for kids to be able to take some time out, sit with one of our friendly dogs, grab a book and read in a relaxed, happy environment. libraries schools book shops children's events Our goals for 2016 is to: Increase brand awareness: This is a fairly new concept, it’s about educating the target audience about who we are and why AAT education could motivate their child / student to learn. Line up meetings with literacy support or English coordinators in primary or lower high schools to discuss the benefits of using AAt dogs in their English curriculum. Grow our relationship with Berry street, where we have a stable timetable of students we are tutoring and positive feedback from the houses we are working with. What is our unique selling position: Two things really, but they both come back to quality and professionalism. Clients working with us will get a quality teacher: I am an experienced teacher, curriculum developer who holds a masters in Teaching. Clients working with us will experience the highest standards in AAT trained dogs: Minnie and Oscar have been trained using a proven method and have passed all their AAT obedience and training tests. Our Competitors: There are other reading programs, which brings dogs into classrooms, where kids read to dogs. They are normally run by retirees who don’t have education training. Their dogs are often friendly, not not well trained. There are also some great AAT therapists who are doing awesome work – but their focus is on psychology and not education. Target audience: Parents who ‘think outside the square’ when it comes to motivating their children, who have children who are reluctant readers, lacking motivation and love animals. Age from years 8 – 15 (although I do teach kids lower and higher than that) English teachers / head of department’s who are looking for an opportunity to reinforce their curriculum through a unique experience.
