Great History From the Shed
The History of England is a podcast that started when podcasts were young in 2010. It tells the story of England and the English with as much wit as the author can manage, which can be not very much, but sometimes makes people laugh. It has built an audience of mainly 35 - 65 year olds, people who love history, of course, but also language, a spot of English literature, and old stuff. There's a hint of nostalgia and tradition, though generally the podcast tries to present detailed, well argued history that would stand up in front of the Prof - after 1.5million words we've only got to 1553, so it's in depth. More recently, we have spawned new podcasts - The Things that Made England which is about stuff like HP sauce and Magna Carta. And there's History in Technicolor - a podcast about all those history films you love (Master and Commander) and hate (Braveheart). Most importantly we have paying members, and they pay £40 a year for Shedcasts - extra content that includes occasional stuff like placenames and Henry VIII's beard;and complete history of Scotland. We are thinking of other products and services to boot - history gifts, and maybe history tours, so the designed logo would act as an overarching brand for the whole business.
The author makes a big deal of the fact that he writes and speaks these podcasts from a shed. He does in fact, it's no lie. But the shed also communicates some associated brand values; the podcast tries to be gentle, told with humour and warmth, with sympathy, modern politics is banned, once upon a time birdsong could be heard on the tracks occasionally (until I changed my mic, curse it), there's a hint of nostalgia; although the history is rigorous and detailed it is a story. We thought that a romanticised, simple, line illustration of the shed to act as the podcasts overarching logo might be a good idea - though feel free to disagree. Perhaps we could add a chimney to recall old days, though that would be fibbing. I have attached the design for two of the podcasts, however we would like the shed design to be very different to these two - it does not have to follow the same design traits. Also here's a picture of the actual shed. We are looking for more of an illustration rather than a set logo, that can be used for many different things; almost a romanticised line version of the shed, in a Constable style painting of a cottage. People need to look at the image and think 'how lovely! I want to be in there!' The kind of people who will want to be in the shed are people who value old things, like chaos rather than order, comfort rather than cleanliness.
