Thimble.io got their new logo design by running a design contest:
A logo to make electronics more fun? Yes :) Please help us!
Check out Thimble.io's Logo design contest…
Hi there, My name is Oscar, one of the founders of Thimble. If you're reading this, thank you for taking a shot at designing a logo for us. We're excited to see what you come up with. We tried ourselves and although we've been using a decent one for a while, it's time for something a little better. Our current one is at www.thimble.io. In a nutshell, Thimble delivers a monthly orange box to your doorstep with electronics parts to learn and build fun and useful hardware devices (robots, drones, LED cubes, alarm clocks, etc). We have a learning app that provides instructions for you to build what's inside each kit. Some folks call us 'Birchbox for electronics' or 'Heathkits or Erector Sets of the 21st century'. That's great and all but we want to be just Thimble. :) If you really want to get a sense of what we're about, I'd encourage you to check out our Kickstarter page. http://kck.st/1PWC38W. We're 39 days in and have brought in close to $229,000. So as you can tell, our logo is going to need to be kick-ass. Our target audience is the DIY Electronics and maker community. These are people that love to create. They'd rather create something themselves than go out and buy it. They want to understand how the world works and we plan to offer a product that can quench that thirst. Specifically, we're going after kids and adults that have an interest in building things. For the older crowd, we're targeting parents that want to spend more time with their family but also enjoy technical projects for themselves. Thank you, Oscar
Other color requirements
We have a website and logo at the moment; people love the color and enjoy the logo. We feel there is an electronics element missing in the logo. We tried playing with it but failed. You can see the changes from the files we've attached below. We are inspired by the thimble because it is an icon for making something.(true story: we were once presented with the challenge to sew clothes onto a robot - we kept cutting our fingers and had to use a thimble). I think you can get a sense of why the thimble is important to us. :) It's part of our story. We recently learned that our current logo is similar to the 'Mozilla by Thimble' logo and want to differentiate ourselves. Their logo is attached below. We like the thimble and wish to leave it in our name but we'd like to add electronics circuits elements inside the thimble. I've included pictures of other logos to give you a sense of what we're going for. We're not tied to the font but we want something of that nature. We don't mind thinking outside the box and going for other types of electronics symbols. We've entertained the idea of a mascot, like a robot, or adding tools somewhere in there. Overall though, we want something simple. If I had to pick five words that our logo could make people feel, it would be: 1) fun 2) approachable 3) electronics 4) playful 5) trustworthy

Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
