LAtPoly got their new logo design by running a design contest:
Wanted: A logo for a new company, "StartUp!"

Our tech consulting business is launching with two distinct audiences in mind: 1. Small local businesses: Consulting + technical documentation and/or developing customized training courses. 2. Public with expected audience being age 45+ : Workshops, training, one-on-one assistance. Our mission statement: "To assist the curious on how to start up and thrive on today’s tech." (Hence we're doing business locally as "StartUp!" - we can help you StartUp on the iPhone, on Facebook, etc.)
Logo types to explore
The founders of "StartUp!" are two (approximately) 30 years old females. Thus we want to present our company and logo as professional, youthful, modern, and clean. First and foremost, we want our logo to be easy to read for our older clients. It's important that our logo is not distracting or so ornate/complex that it would frustrate our older clients. Full disclosure: Our parents are going to help in the selection...and my Mom is all kinds of critical. :) That said, we don't want our logo to be: * Too dull. Hey, we're only 30 and have to look at this logo every day. We want to like it! * Nor "masculine-techie" (no red/blacks or the default black-hat design ethos). The owners are young and energetic. This is a small company and not a fortune 500. We want those aspects expressed in our design. * We want our older clients to feel comfortable calling us that first time. We'll want our logo to communicate the adjectives: "courteous" and "open." * BUT...we still want a clean professional logo so that local businesses, between our content and logo, will feel we are knowledgable and legit. How to do this? It may be via the use of color(s), or perhaps a great icon. Personally I'm always attracted to upbeat colors such as oranges, lighter greens, and blues when used tastefully. EXAMPLES I LIKE: 1. A local company whose website I enjoy is mindbodyonline.com. It's bright but still professional and engaging (IMO). Maybe a little cheesy though. 2. And a logo that has branded well and is easy to read that I like is Birchbox's (www.birchbox.com) although we're not interested in anything pink. (Note: Use Google images to see the normal logo - they updated their website for Christmas and it's no longer on their front page.) If you do decide to incorporate an icon in our design, my personal preference is to have it be to the left of (e.g. in front of) the business name. If there is any clever way to highlight or exaggerate "Up!" - I'm very open to the idea. Perhaps making the right-side in the letter "U" be arrow-like? I don't want the right-side of the U to be taller than the left per say or look like a devil's tail - but you may be able to do a flourish or something similar with it. Throwing it out there...
