A researched based approach to teaching reading, spelling and literacy skills. A simple flash card game with specific teaching techniques. Allows older children thru adults, learning literacy skills, to learn and practice phonograms incorporating the auditory and visual components required for reading. This HTML5 based iPad app will be used by students struggling with reading skills, dyslexia, or visual difficulties, as well as for basic literacy training.
Needs to be simple and clean with elegance and depth for user experience. The final deliverable will have all the SVG, PNG and PSD/AI (or other Adobe software) source files. It will have two app screens and an app icon. App icon needs to be hi-res, for retina displays. Needs to support all iPad resolutions, including Retina displays. Need to include a variation of the Logic of English logo on the Home screen, and preferably on the play page. The existing Logic of English logo design will be retained. Can use either the colored or a grayscale logo (included). Need to include the “smiling i” device/logo somewhere, which will be on the app icon as well. Color usage needs to be subtle, not loud or distracting. Colors may tie in to existing color palette, but do not need to. Logo colors can be either established palette colors or shades of grey. Font for flash card letters is flexible, but needs to be a clean, simple, san-serif font, such as Helvetica. It would be best if fonts were based on iPad built-in font library. The Logic of English logo can be a graphic rather than font element. Please see attached files with wireframes and concept screens.
Phonics by Logic of English
This design is for the 2 main screens and App icon, the Home screen and Main Play screen where users will be presented with 4 flash cards and sounds. From the Home screen users can start game play, or listen to phonogram sounds. Also available is the Setup/User configuration and “More Info”. The Main Play screen will give users an auditory sound to match the visual phonograms to. Users select the flash card matching the sound, can repeat the sound with a button, end the game, or return to home screen. Level progress, mastery of particular phonograms, advancement through groups of single and multi-letter phonograms, and multiple users are tracked. Please see attached files for additional details and required elements. We will need to fit in multi-letter phonograms. I unwisely chose all single-letter phonograms for the examples. Multi-letter phonograms are where more than one letter come together to form a sound. Such as TH, EA, IGH, and AW. OUGH is the longest, at 4 letters, and no M-width letters.
What to avoid
Not immature style - We already have another app for younger children, ages 3-7, based on the fully illustrated children’s book. This app is for older children and adults. Should not be immature and distracting, but also not boring. Avoid visual distraction - Many users will have disabilities related to visual or cognitive distraction. Colors and 3D need to be subtle. This app is not for the visually impaired, merely those who struggle with dyslexia/dysgraphia. The strongest visual element needs to be the letters on the cards themselves. Other design elements should not distract from them. Avoid words - What? No words? Well, minimize the use so that children, or adults who can’t read, or don’t know English, can understand how to use the game. Specifically the action button icons, play, listen, repeat, stop, home, need to be picture icons, rather than words. Some parts will be intended for teachers or parents to set up, like the settings page and more info page. Differentiate from Montessorium Letters - Montessorium did a great job with their app. http://montessorium.com/letters/ It has a beautiful, simple, and elegant design. But it is a different teaching method and does not incorporate auditory or other important pedagogical elements. We need to differentiate from this app, even though we like it.
