What's your vision?
I would like someone to re-imagine an image that was important to me and so many other kids who love science and engineering: the flyleaf from the Tom Swift series of books. I would like the result to immediately recognizable—for instance, the clothing and character and composition should stay the same—but done with more artistry and more modern detail. Here are two examples of real space flight controls. http://d.pr/i/01FixM http://d.pr/i/aTAi8n One of things you'll notice is that there are lots of glass screens. And buttons usually have protective guards around them, as you can see here: http://d.pr/i/REcena
The original image was a monochrome hand-drawn sketch. Your version doesn't necessarily have to be in that style (though it could be). What is important is that the dreamy, adventurous, somewhat vintage spirit is maintained, and that the result looks great on a wall and is recognizable. Many of the details in the original drawing were, even at the time, a little ridiculous—for instance, there are strip charts and knife switches being used on a flying lab, and there is exhaust coming from the back of a vehicle in space. All of the instruments and readouts need to be updated with more modern variants. Bonus points for adding touches which pay tribute to other books in the second series by Victor Appleton II (Tom Swift Jr.). You can find the list of books at http://www.tomswift.info/homepage/ . For instance, little display models of other vehicles can be placed on shelves or mounted on the walls or ceiling. If you have a style you'd like to use, you can show me another artwork that you think shows that and ask if I like it. Use a style you love, and maybe I will, too. Especially if it has a vintage, nostalgic feel to it. The only things I definitely would NOT like is a cartoon-like or too modern or clip-arty look. Final print will be a wall poster, probably 24" wide by 18" high (600mm x 450mm).
