HandGround got their new other design by running a design contest:
Product Design for Coffee Grinder to Promote Sustainability

Food & Drink
We are crowdsourcing the development of a manual coffee grinder to promote sustainability in the coffee industry.
What's your vision?
SUMMARY Our team is looking for a product designer with imagination and creativity to turn a simple coffee grinder into an icon of sustainability in the coffee industry. The winning design will be voted on by people around the world who are part of The CrowdCoffee Experiment. The winner will be recognized in our Kickstarter project and will be invited to join the HandGround team through product development and manufacturing. Project assets are attached for you to work off of or you may start from scratch. There is an extraordinary amount of room for creativity, however the main focus is the handle and knob. If you think the current body of the grinder looks good, keep it! | DESIGN FOCUS • Handle & knob - The main reason we are doing this project is to produce a handle & knob design. The handle must attach to the side of the top cap and pivot on the knob. Keep in mind the leverage needed to crank in a clockwise motion. The holes in the handle and the knob in [capture8.jpg] and [capture9.jpg] were disliked in a recent CrowdCoffee survey. • Body - No molds have been made so we are open to changing or adding something to the "hourglass" shape. It could be cylindrical, square or something we haven't imagined. You have full control to make changes that you think would improve the overall functionality and aesthetics. Just keep in mind the mechanical functionality listed in Design Constraints must be preserved. | WHAT MAKES A WINNING DESIGN - Sustainability - Simplicity - Manufacturability - Recognizability - Within Design Constraints | DESIGN CONSTRAINTS - The overall height and location of components that provide mechanical functionality to the grinder. We can not change the position of: - Internal gears in the top cap - Vertical axle which drives the burr mill - Handle location must remain on the side of top cap - Burr mill must remain under the hopper and inside the adjustment rings - Adjustment rings need to house the burr mill - Glass catcher screws into the adjustment rings and needs to be under the burr mill | INSPIRATION Chemex - Note how they added the wood coupling and leather cord to turn their glass pitcher into an iconic brewing device. http://www.chemexcoffeemaker.com/ SOMA - Note the simplicity and focus on sustainability https://www.drinksoma.com/ Competitors - To view a gallery of pictures of manual coffee grinders visit: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B4D-Vfk8fuutazhTS1V1ak40cU0&usp=sharing | WHAT YOUR SUBMISSION SHOULD INCLUDE - A clear view of the grinder with the handle attached. Multiple angles are a plus! - You can create original artwork or build off of the assets we provided. It is not a requirement to be modeled in 3D or CAD. - You may put the grinder in a natural setting (kitchen, coffee shop) but we may request a solid background. | HOW THE PRODUCT WORKS 1. Turn the Top cap a 1/4 twist to lift it off the Hopper. 2. Load the Hopper with whole coffee beans and then put the Top cap back on. 3. Turn the Adjustment ring to set your desired grind coarseness. 4. Crank the Handle to start grinding coffee with the ceramic burr mill. 5. Perfectly ground coffee is collected in the Glass catcher • Top cap - Contains 2 bevel gears that transfer handle motion to vertical axle which the burr grinder is connected. It is removable with a 1/4 twist to load beans into the hopper. • Handle & knob - The handle will crank clockwise. The holes in the handle and the knob in [capture8.jpg] and [capture9.jpg] were disliked by The CrowdCoffee experiment. • Hopper - Made out of clear plastic to hold the whole coffee beans before they enter the burr mill. • Adjustment ring - Turning the ring will adjust the coarseness level of the grinder which changes how big the particles of ground coffee are. The burr mill is housed inside the rings. • Glass catcher - The catcher is made out of borosilicate glass and will catch the ground coffee as it falls out of the burr mill. | ASSETS The first 5 PNG files are the latest rendering with the handle removed. You can open them in PS to change background color. The next 2 JPG files [capture 8] & [capture 9] are renderings with the handle attached. This handle received negative feedback from CrowdCoffee surveys because the holes would be hard to clean. The last 4 photos (in blue) are screen shots from the 3D .STL file. | UPDATE: We also added .STEP .IGS and .EPRT files | We are unable to upload STL files to 99Designs, but you can download them from this link: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B4D-Vfk8fuutMXBDeGVNUUR0eDQ&authuser=0 If you would like to view the 3D models, you can download the free program AutoDesk 123D Design and be able to work with the models there.
We are excited to see what comes from this experiment! We have done 99Designs projects before (for websites and logos) so we are familiar with the communication process and we will be as responsive as possible. It is rare that a physical product design is done on 99Designs but we are fully confident that the community is up for the task! We plan to assemble a case study and publish the results to encourage more people to use 99Designs for product design. If you have an idea, but are not sure if we will like it, go ahead and send it to us or upload a quick sketch and we will respond ASAP with whether or not it fits our criteria and if you should continue with the design. Finally we would like to say Thank YOU! This project would not be possible without you and if you are reading this, we are grateful to have you considering the project. It all began with a design brief.
A quick, interactive guide helped them understand their design style and captured exactly what they needed in their other design.
Designers across the globe delivered design magic.
HandGround collaborated with designers to refine their ideas
When design entries come in, you can rate them so designers know what you’re looking for in your logo design.
99designs has great collaboration tools so you can pinpoint and capture your ideas
And then… they selected a winner!
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
