kgaines got their new web page design by running a design contest:
A website that makes an IMPACT
Check out kgaines's Web page design contest…
The website was created by the American Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) whose mission is to provide high quality professional development, to advocate and collaborate at all levels, and to build communities of learners for all involved in mathematics education in the first two years of college. In 2018 a new Standards Document (IMPACT) was released. A Standards document had been released in 1997, 2007, and now 2018. Because of the opportunities that technology now provides, the intent is to keep this new release a 'living document' by using a website instead of just having the hardcopy document (that is only updated every 10 years). The website not only contains the document itself, but several other pages that are intended to keep current and relevant information available to the mathematics community (especially in two-year colleges, aka community colleges). We want to encourage people to keep checking the site daily/weekly/monthly etc. instead of just reading the document and then forgetting about it.
The logo which appears on the cover of the document (see attached file) was designed to represent the 'ripple effect' that every instructor has on their students, college, and society. You will see that the tabs on the website are all green which was intended to carry that theme and to coordinate with the logo when it is shown with the lime background. While the logo itself (black and blue) needs to be used, the color scheme could change (but is limited to the colors available on Joomla). The layout must match the layout for the Protostar template of Joomla..
PURPOSE/FUNCTION OF EACH PAGE 1. HOME - We want to keep the tabs on boxes on the right but would like them to be more interesting. The 'content' section is where it says "The links below take you to..." This portion will be randomly changed to contain the content of one of the other pages. Right now it is 'stuck' on the IMPACT Document page as we are working to build meaningful content on the other pages. We would like this to be inviting and not overwhelming. Themes to consider: Impact, ripple effect, mathematics, college teaching, the four pillars from the document (Proficiency, Ownership, Engagement, Student Success). 2. IMPACT Document - The original published document This actual content will be on the page: "The IMPACT Document builds upon the content of Crossroads in Mathematics and Beyond Crossroads: Implementing Mathematics Standards in the First Two Years of College. The goal of IMPACT is to improve mathematics education in the first two years of college by presenting clear guidance on how to impact the mathematical prowess of students. It is research based and was framed around the concept of the four pillars of PROWESS (Proficiency, Ownership, Engagement, and Student Success) as an innovative way to enhance our students’ mathematical ability and bravery through recommendations for continuous improvement of teaching in the first two years of college. " This page of the IMPACT Live! site contains the original document and can easily be navigated chapter-by-chapter. The document was intended to be expanded upon as new information arises in the research of mathematics in two-year colleges. The expanded content can be found in the IMPACT Plus pages of this site. The 'content' part of the template should have links to each of the chapters in the book. We would like some sort of boxes or icons for each chapter. Please note that the right hand side boxes are common to ALL pages on the site. 3. IMPACT Plus - Extensions of the published document This actual content will be on the page: "When IMPACT was written, the contributors were aware that mathematics education is in constantly changing and evolving. This page of the IMPACT Live! site contains new topics that were either just becoming recognized while the document was being written or occurred after publication. The goal of keeping IMPACT a living document is accomplished by publishing this new content as it arises." This page will have areas added on different topics in math education that have changed since the document was released. So this content will change, but for now we would like a nice way to highlight the 5 Titles that are on the page. 4. IMPACT in Action - Bi-Weekly postings highlighting different content of IMPACT This actual content will be on the page: "One of the goals of IMPACT Live! is to keep it ever-changing by continuing to introduce topics of relevance to faculty. This page will begin with a bi-weekly spotlight of topics from IMPACT and is intended to possibly become a weekly spotlight on various topics that will inspire faculty to continue to make an impact on our students' successes." This page is kind of like a blog page but will specifically highlight areas covered in the document. A new item will be posted every other week. You can see that the first one is posted. We just want a way to make this appealing. The writers may insert their own pictures into their content. 5. IMPACTful Conversations -Forum/ Discussion Board for sharing questions and comments about mathematics in the first two years of college This actual content will be on the page: "This page is intended to provide a method for those interested in teaching mathematics in the first two years of college. A login is required to ensure that the contributors are only those that have a vested interested in student success. This page is probably more recognizable as a Discussion Board." 6. IMPACTful Thoughts - Monthly insights into improving college teaching in mathematics This actual content will be on the page: "In an effort to keep IMPACT Live! ever-changing, this page is dedicated to presenting thoughts and insights from people who are leaders in innovation in education. Posts will be monthly and may be in the form of personal thoughts as well as possible interviews with people who are exploring exciting new ideas in mathematics education. " This page is kind of like a blog page but will specifically highlight innovations in education. A new item will be posted every month. We just want a way to make this appealing. The writers may insert their own pictures into their content. 7. Instructional Resources - a repository of activities, handouts, presentations, videos and other resources for mathematics faculty This actual content will be on the page: "Sharing resource is vital part of any successful department. For some faculty, they are the only members of their department. This page provides an avenue for faculty to share their wonderful ideas with ALL faculty from different states and even countries." This page will have not only 'presentations' as you see on the page currently, but will ultimately be a repository of lesson plans, projects, activities, and other resources for math faculty to share with each other. 8. Committee Connections - a portal for AMATYC Committees, ANETS, and Affiliates to communication and post information This actual content will be on the page: "This page is a place for people who are not necessarily involved with various AMATYC groups to see what kind of creative projects that are in progress. It will also provide a way to communicate important schedules for both face-to-face conferences as well as online meetings." If you go to amatyc.org you can see a list of the Affiliates (these are states that hold conferences) under the 'About Us" tab, If you click on the "Get Involved" tab and then 'join a committee or ANET" you will see a list of groups that we would like to be able to provide information and links to. "
What to avoid
We are open to suggestions and don't necessarily have any restrictions for designers at this point.
I have attached the executive summary for the IMPACT document. It has more details (especially about PROWESS) that might be helpful for designers to understand the document that the website it based off of without having to read the 100+ pages document. If the designers want to know more about AMATYC they can go to amatyc.org so see more about the organization. This website is really bad, and is just referenced here for information.
