My aim was to create a contemporary cover that conveys a lighthearted feeling, combining the elements that the client requested in their brief. I drew a silhouette of the author from a photo that she provided, and used blue - teal tones for the background with a subtle mandala element. For the title and author name i chose a script font that i manipulated in order to add an original touch to it, by making the words connected at some point, and the end lines continuing outside the frame.

For Kokoda Trial, one important request was for the designer to use two images provided by Rosemary and Mr. Richardson. The first was the photo of a memorial plaque designed by the author himself. The second was a partial map of the Kokoda Track as it was in WWII, and showing Templeton's Crossing. Historical memoirs are amongst my favorite books to design. I love them because they tell the true stories of those people who made a difference. But there's always a challenge when designing a WWII memoir. And that's avoiding to make it look like a WWII fiction book. It really helped that Rosemary provided real-life materials. This way, my focused was on finding a clean layout to tie in all the elements. I avoided the textured, grungy look because those effects are more suited to fiction books. Instead, I created a clean layout with emphasis on the emotional, personal side of the story.

Even though Lianne’s book is about how magic happens if we stay true to following our passions, it is also down to earth and often humorous as touching on subjects like life after death, law of attraction, natural health and spiritual practices. Lianne started her project by suggestion the use of abstract elements like a bird in flight for example. However, I truly felt it was better to use their dog on the cover because it relates to the whole meaning of the book—Leela is a sanskrit word meaning dance of life. To my great pleasure, Lianne really liked my concept and we kept refining it by integrating different natural elements to really catch the beauty of life. I admit I have a personal affinity for memoirs and Lianne’s book is no exception. Her book is a proof that life only seems like a series of un-related events, when, in fact, it is intrinsically connected and is worth living no matter how difficult it might get. I am proud to be part of Lianne’s book!

I took elements from the story line which was about a girl with an illness falling down a hollow tree and coming out of it illness-free. I made the design appear heavenly as part of her experience was going to heaven. I wanted to give the impression of heaven and earth and so I faded out part of the girl to try to express that.

"Fifty Dates in Fifty States" is a fun memoir book retelling a nine-month adventure. The cover needed to convey the idea of freedom. I was very happy that Tiffany didn’t want a typical design based on romantic clichés, like hearts and such. We both agreed that something on the wild side would work better for her cover. I choose the symbol of the American road because the traveling idea behind Tiffany’s life adventure was more important than the romance itself. It wasn’t necessarily the dating but the journey that turned to be life changing. I loved this project from the very beginning. I loved the fact that Tiffany’s book was based on such an original adventure and I truly admired her courage! For sure, "Fifty Dates in Fifty States" is the right book for the single ladies. It is the proof there is still hope out there and it can also come with a lot of fun and adventure.

The focus of this illustration is the girl looking back over her shoulder. The frame element was added around her face to give the idea of looking into a mirror, examining herself. Some swirling elements were also added along the dress and in the hair to add depth and allow the illustration to tie into the frame. The butterflies emphasize the watercolor feel and represent transformation. The title text has a hand written style that works with the line drawing of the illustration.
